Oral Language
•
Play the “Would you rather?” conversational game with your kids at home. Simply pose a question of would they rather one thing or another and then ask them why they made that decision.
•
Example:
o
Would you rather go on a trip to the zoo or the beach? Why?
o
Would you rather have a longer recess or a longer lunch at school? Why?
o
Would you rather have two cars or two houses? Why?
o
Would you rather live in a place that was always very hot or a place that was always very cold? Why?
Reading
• Practice grade level sight words (Dolch words or Fry’s List words) with your child. Ask their teacher which words are at their level.
• Practice reading the sight words in fun games like:
o
Go to www.abcya.com – click on their grade – then click on sight word bingo.
o
Put the sight words on index cards. Then put them on the floor, up the stairs etc. You have to read the word before you hop on it!o Write the sight words on disposable cups. Then read the sight words as you stack the cups. Once you stack all the cups use a bean bag or small ball to knock them down!
•
Then read nightly with your child and try to find those sight words in the stories you read together.
