So my child has been diagnosed with a Learning Disability.... Now what?

Often times parents who have recently received a psychological assessment for their child, who received a diagnoses of learning disability ask... What can we do to help our child be successful? Teachers and Special Education workers offer a ton of suggestions which can seem overwhelming. One place which I would recommend visiting is the Windsor-Essex County Learning Disabilities Association. If your child has been diagnosed with a learning disability by a licensed psychologist then they are entitled to free membership. Here is a bit about the association taken from their website.

The main purpose of LDAWE is to provide information and referral services to individuals, parents, professionals, and other people interested in learning disabilities and ADHD. In keeping with the mission statement, the following Programs and Services for individuals with a diagnosed learning disability have been added in addition to the information and referral services:
  • Social skills training for children and adults
  • Basic literacy and math tutoring for children and youth
  • Transition planning program for youth and young adults
  • Computer enrichment and adaptive technology training for youth and adults
  • Recreation program for youth and adults
  • Parent advocacy training program
  • Employment supports (job developing, coaching, retention and advancement) for adults
  • Workshops, conferences and other public awareness events
  • Community lending library
