Hooda Math: A Great Math Website

http://hoodamath.com/

Learning while reinforcing math skills through playing games is the philosophy of this site created by a former middle school math teacher. Games, tutorials, worksheets, and movies are all included on the site. Games are grouped into categories of geometry, logic, and arithmetic. Within each category, titles are further categorized by particular skills such as addition/subtraction, puzzles, maze games, and much more. Many tutorials are also included for topics including decimals, fractions, algebra, integers, and more. Movies are brightly colored cartoons which help explain math topics such as trigonometry and the quadratic formula. Don't shy away from the link to worksheets, these worksheets are created to complement interactive whiteboard games and can be downloaded directly from the site. Another area to check out is the timed test portion of the site, results can be set up to be emailed directly to teachers and students.

Helping a struggling learner at home: What parents can do.

As an educator, I am often asked what parents can do to help their struggling learner at home. Often the finances are not there to able them to hire a tutor, and the child has not yet been placed in special education services, or has received extra support but has not seemed to benefit much from it. I would always recommend that the child and parent work together on basic skills until they are mastered. Basic computation drills and practice in phonics type activities always brings a better result. Provide your child with ample resources for reading and being read to. The time taken to go over a much anticipated story or book will motivate them to try. Books that are slightly beyond their reading level can be used if they are provided with assistance in reading. Remember to always reward and celebrate their achievements.

Here is an excellent downloadable resource with more information and suggestions:
